My Short Ebook Makes Me $1,000 per month
I make full-time income writing shorts
I am writing short ebooks for the last 7+ years.
Tip — Use pen names for different genres.
I started with the romance niche. 10+ years back Romance was a really popular niche. Whosoever wanted to make QUICK money, then romance niche was the best. Never failed anyone. never failed me.
I wrote mostly romance stories in my early 20s. After that things began to change. I never loved reading non-fiction before. I’ll hardly pick books only if they sold in millions. Most of the time I never went beyond the second chapter.
Non-fiction is boring — This is what I used to think.
I started writing non-fiction to give myself a break from regular writing. Writing fiction often involves character development, place setting, etc. I wrote mostly in SERIES so these elements are a must before planning out the first chapter.
I loved it. But it was time-consuming.
Things changed when I wrote my first non-fiction ebook — My mistakes in self-publishing.
Short books VS long books — Money point of view
Long books -> Not for newbies. Best for making money long-time.
Short ebooks -> Best for those who wanna try hands on new topics
I started writing novella-length books (around 50k) in series format. Series sell incredibly well compared to standalone books. It doesn’t matter what your genre is — Crime, thriller, non-fiction, cooking, romance, and fantasy.
From a money point of view, long books written in a series format always make more. But its always time-consuming.
My first novella (contemporary romance category) took me around 3 months to write the first draft. Another month to edit it.
Writing one book took almost 3–4 months from start to finish.
Selling them was fine for me. But writing books was. Committing 3–4 months to a book was not something I wanted to continue doing. I needed a way where I could write stories I love but in a fast-paced manner.
After a few days, I was introduced to short ebooks through a writer on Reddit.
I don’t remember her name now. She was making a full-time income only through shorts. Her stories were around 5k to 12k. And she would complete it within a week, with NO help.
This was the first time I met a writer making full-time writing only short ebooks.
Why I chose to write short ebooks
- It's best for driving traffic to longer works.
- I wanted to try my hands on different genres.
- I like stories/ topics that take almost 10 days to write the first draft.
- Long-term commitment is not my thing anymore. I even wrote those books in which I lost interest after a few chapters.
- Short ebooks DO MAKE money.
- Easy to write. Easy to edit.
- Can be completed within a few days.
Marketplaces to sell ebooks
There are more than 20+ platforms I know where you can sell your ebooks. I have already written an article on it. How I Earned Money Self-Publishing 11 Ebooks
Conclusion
I’ll end this here. I have written all types of ebooks from romance to horror and even fantasy. Now I concentrate only on non-fiction (I use pen names to separate the genre).
I make money only from those ebooks that I enjoy writing. So make sure you write your best book first. Everything else is secondary.
