On iOS 18.2, the Apple Intelligence toolkit takes up 7GB of iPhone storage, and users cannot delete it if it is activated.
In an update in October 2024, Apple said Apple Intelligence would take up about 4GB of users’ iPhone storage.
However, in iOS 18.2 released in mid-December 2024, the company added a series of features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, ChatGPT integrated with Siri… Therefore, Apple Intelligence now takes up 7 GB on compatible iPhone models, nearly double compared to before.
Specifically, on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, 16 Plus and 16 Pro with 128 GB of internal memory, Apple Intelligence used to take up 3% of the capacity and now increases to 5.5%. The Pro Max version with internal memory starting from 256 GB helps users not to worry too much about the storage space that AI takes up.
While it’s possible to disable Apple Intelligence, users won’t be able to “reclaim” the space reserved for AI after installation.
Apple Intelligence is expected to be updated with many new tools in the future, so it will need more storage. Therefore, technology sites predict that Apple may remove the 128 GB version on the new generation iPhone.
In addition, because at least 8GB of RAM is needed for the iPhone to run Apple Intelligence smoothly, the low-cost iPhone SE 4, expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2025, is likely to also be equipped with 8GB or more of RAM.
The first set of Apple Intelligence features was rolled out with the iOS 18.1 update on October 28, followed by iOS 18.2 last month. The tool is currently available for US English, while a Vietnamese version will be available later this year.
